Virgin Coconut Oil (Cold-Pressed)
In 2015, the local Indonesian government of Bitung (located in North Sulawesi) initiated a project to help small scale local farmer families to improve their livelihoods. Bitung is a city with mostly big fishery industries and fish canning. Small scale local farmers don’t have many opportunities of making an income, but many of them own a small forest garden, where coconut palms grow in nature. These forest gardens have been in the family for generations and will now provide the farmers with an income, so they will be motivated to keep protecting their forest gardens.
The result of the project is a newly built Virgin Coconut Oil processing facility centrally located in the Bitung area. The complete process is cold, the coconut oil is not heated anywhere in the process in order to maintain optimum quality. Local small scale farmers sell their coconuts to the factory, where the Virgin Coconut Oil is produced by skilled an experienced workers. The production facility provides jobs to 80 people to run the operations. They also educate the farmers about how to select the best young coconuts for producing a high quality VCO. The farmers are guaranteed a fair price all year round, so they no longer depend on the bigger factories who control and suppress the prices.
After a trial period of 2 years we achieved:
Stable high quality product
Production facility of 20.000 liter VCO/month
Over 250 Small farmer families employed
Over 275 hectares of natural forest protected
Virgin Coconut Oil has a wide range of uses and can be used in pure form as massage oil, face or hair masks or lotion to moisturize and nourish the skin. Due to its natural antibacterial properties, it is also ideal to use in deodorant and it is also widely used as an ingredient in products such as soaps, lip balms, body butters and sunscreens. It can also be used as cooking oil or for medical uses such as for the treatment of (baby) rash, candida fungus or healing sores.
By purchasing this product you are helping smallholder farmers in North Sulawesi to make a sustainable living from their existing forest gardens. We offer full traceability for our VCO, so you would be able to trace the location of the forest garden, which farmers have supplied your products and what payments they received for their coconuts.
